Tucked away in the hills above Waikanae, the Hemi Matenga Scenic Reserve is a natural sanctuary offering panoramic views, lush native forest and a variety of walking trails.
About the reserve
Spanning 30 hectares, Hemi Matenga is home to one of the largest remaining areas of kohekohe forest in Aotearoa. Forming part of an ecosystem network that links Kapiti Island with the Tararua Range, the reserve offers sweeping views of Kapiti Island and Waikanae Estuary.
Whether you’re after a gentle stroll or a challenging hike, there’s a track for all levels.

- By car — Take the old State Highway 1 into Waikanae, turn east over the railway line and onto Elizabeth Street, then left into Winara Ave, then right into Tui Crescent or Kakariki Grove.
