A true test of endurance set in one of Aotearoa's most iconic mountain ranges.
One of New Zealand's toughest trail running events, the Tararua Mountain Race is back. Not for the inexperienced or faint-hearted, this wild, unpredictable, and punishing journey follows the historic Southern Crossing, offering an experience that is as breathtaking as it is challenging.
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Tararua Ranges, just north of Wellington and on Kāpiti's doorstep, this is mountain running at its most uncompromising. Steep climbs, exposed ridgelines, rugged backcountry terrain, and unpredictable weather make this the ultimate test of endurance, navigation, and resilience.
The main 36km point-to-point course – traversing the historic Southern Crossing - runs from Kaitoke to Ōtaki Fork, with a total ascent of 2,300 metres.
