Chrystalls Bend Walkway is a much-loved local track that winds along the Ōtaki River. The trail continues on from the Ōtaki River Trail, but you can also enjoy it on its own. Suitable for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders, the path is mostly grass and gravel, meandering through young native bush with open views of the mountains.
Picnic seats are spaced at regular intervals, offering perfect spots to pause, rest, or simply take in the views of the river and the Tararuas. At the start of the track you may hear some noise from the nearby working quarry, but before long the walkway moves further into the bush and under the shade of tall trees.
Eventually, you’ll arrive at a picturesque footbridge with a lagoon and more picnic seats to sit and enjoy lunch. The lagoon is home to ducklings and cygnets in the spring. If visiting later in the day, you can watch the sky change colour at dusk, lighting up the Tararua mountains.
This track is suitable for all ages and abilities. Wheelchair access is limited, as you will need to use the quarry road onto the main track — this can be muddy and have areas of rough gravel. The rest of the path is relatively smooth and is great for off-road buggies.
Horse riders must get the key to unlock the access gates from Kapiti Coast District Council.
Local tip: Don’t miss the swimming hole by the rocks at the trailhead - a favourite summer spot to cool off on a hot day.
